Kodály Chapter Workshop, Saturday March 6th at UNI

Hi all,

Kodály Educators of Iowa will host Sister Lorna Zemke who will be presenting a great workshop this Saturday, March 6 (at UNI) this weekend. You do not need to have any Kodály training to attend. She will be talking about getting jazz into our curriculums and will present a lot of fun and worthwhile activities (geared for upper elementary and middle school) on how to easily add more of this style of music into our teaching. She will also be bringing items from the Silver Lake catalog that will be available for sale. She is a fabulous presenter and we hope you'll be able to attend!

FIO Chapter Workshop, Saturday Jan. 16th

Dear First Iowa Orff Members and Friends,

On Saturday, January 16th, we will have our annual Chapter Sharing meeting in the Gallagher-Bluedorn Performing Arts Center at UNI. It's going to be a really fun and productive meeting! Here is out schedule for the day:

9-12 Work on pieces out of Music for Children, Volume I: Tim is going to share an Orff volumes piece, then we are going to break up into small groups to learn other pieces out of the volumes

12-1 Lunch

1-2 Iowa Core Update and work

2-3 Recorder reading session

Everyone will need to bring a recorder, and MFC Volume I, if you own it. And, if you have altos, tenors and bass recorder, bring them! Also, we will need some extra barred instruments, so please consider bringing one along (especially glockenspiels, xylophones and mallets).

As usual, we will have a potluck lunch. The chapter will provide sandwiches, but we will need help bringing sides, drinks, and desserts. Please e-mail Emily (our fabulous corresponding secretary) if you plan to attend, so that she can organize the potluck. Emily's e-mail is: emilyrosebarnes@gmail.com

I am a music teacher at Summit School in Cedar Rapids and have attended the Orff workshops and find I need to give up my position at my school and was wondering if anyone in the "network" would be interested in a nice part time position at a small private school. It is only two days a week but I thought maybe somebody might be interested or know of someone who was. If this is something you would rather not use the email list for I will totally understand but thought I would give it a try.

Dear First Iowa Orff Members attending the AOSA conference,

I just received an e-mail from Mary Schmelzer (schmelz@comet.n-polk.k12.ia.us.) She is looking to share a hotel room with someone, because her planned roomate will not be able to go. Is there anyone who has room in their hotel OR would like to join her exisitng reservation? Also, she may be interested in carpooling from the Des Moines area. If so, please e-mail Mary directly.

Bring to the workshop....

Hello, All! Sorry for the late notice, but if you are attending the workshop this Saturday, please bring a soprano recorder and a hand drum. We will also need 10-12 extra mallet instruments of varying sizes, so if you can throw one in the car on your way, that would be great.

Also, please remember to rsvp to me (egoulson@msn.com or emilyrosebarnes@gmail.com), regardless of whether or not you will be able to eat lunch with us. We like to have enough notes to go around, etc. :o)

This Saturday, October 10th, is our second chapter workshop of the year, featuring Jaques Schrader, Orff Teacher extraordinaire! Jaques was my movement teacher for all three levels of Orff while I attending the University of St. Thomas. She is an incredible Orff teacher, and I hope that you will all be able to join us!

The workshop will be from 9-3 at UNI in the Bluedorn-Gallagher Performing Arts Center. You many register/check-in when you arrive that morning.

Hi everyone. I was recently asked to be the mentor chairperson for Northeast Iowa for IMEA. My job is to set up a mentor for each first year general music teacher in our district. I am looking for mentors who can be a resource for these new teachers and possibly even visit them sometime. There is grant money that is becoming available to allow mentors to visit their new colleagues at their schools. This will also serve our chapter as we can get these new people to workshops!! I know many of you are aware of this, but I thought it would be appropriate to send out this information through email.

We received word that Nicolas Remfrey, 17-month old grandson of Dwayne (retired Holmes JH band teacher) and Rachel Johnson (Cedar Falls music teacher and accompanist for many of our soloists) suffered a stroke and passed away last Saturday. I'm sure the Johnsons and the Remfreys would appreciate knowing that they are in our thoughts and prayers at this time of tragedy.

A memorial service for Nicolas will be held today (Tuesday, April 28th) at the Northlake Unitarian Church in Kirkland, Washington, starting at 4:00 PM.

In lieu of flowers, the Nicolas Remfrey Memorial Scholarship at Luther College has been established. Contributions can be sent to

Orff Workshop April 18

Dear friends,

Please join us for the First Iowa Orff chapter workshop next Saturday,
April 18, from 9-3 at the Gallagher-Bluedorn Performing Arts Center at
UNI. Our guest clinician is the American Orff Schulwerk Association
(AOSA) President, Jo Ella Hug. Jo Ella teaches in Missoula, Montana,
as well as workshops and levels courses around the country. We are
pleased to have Jo Ella come to Iowa!

Workshops are $20 each plus $10 for membership (if this is your first
workhop this year). Students are just $5.
